TOON stands for Token-Oriented Object Notation — a compact, human-readable way of representing structured data that encodes the same JSON data model but in a format optimized for large language models (LLMs). TOON keeps the meaning of JSON while using much less syntax and fewer tokens.
TOON was created to make structured data more efficient for AI workflows, especially when sending data into or out of LLMs. Because each bracket, comma, and quote in JSON costs tokens when passed to a model, TOON greatly reduces this overhead without changing the semantics of the data.
It’s particularly great for token-sensitive AI workflows like prompt engineering, analysis contexts, retrieval guidance, or generative data templates.
TOON does not replace JSON in the broader software ecosystem — it’s optimized for LLM contexts.
Yes. The TOON specification defines a lossless mapping to and from JSON. That means you can convert JSON → TOON → JSON and preserve the exact same structure and values.
